I got my first major breakout when I was 12 years old and it’s never stopped. That’s right folks for 20 whole years I have had to deal with acne.
Damn, I am old! I’ve tried everything under the sun to keep my acne at bay. Proactiv, Clearasil, Birth control and any other pill my dermatologist prescribed me.
I even tried to go the natural route before but every time I put a Vitamin E, Charcoal, Tea Tree anything on my face, my skin would get absolutely worse. And I wasn’t about that “it gets worse before it gets better” life. I wanted flawless skin and I wanted it as quickly as possible. So for years, I went through the cycle of my skin clearing up with the help of medicine and the latest strain of Proactiv, only for it to break right back out again.
Now that I am in my early
30’s, 20’s I am more concerned about the actual health of my skin. Those chemicals were a great quick fix (sort of 😒) but I started to worry about the long term effects of using that stuff. I mean using salicylic acid for your entire life can’t be a good thing right? So I made the choice to give natural products a go. Especially because I was making healthier choices in other parts of my life. More veggies, more exercise, less dairy (don’t judge me cheese is hard to let go of! ) and more water.
At first, I had no clue where to start. I browsed all the products at Whole Foods and got completely overwhelmed. So I decided to make an appointment at Scratch Goods. Scratch Goods is a “self- service mask bar where customers are guided through the steps and techniques needed to use their all natural Scratch Goods products at home”. All of the skin care products at Scratch Goods are food-grade which means they are safe enough to eat! No parabens, no dyes or artificial fragrances. Just pure natural goodness for the face and skin. Take a peek at my trip there with my bestie Kay a couple of weeks ago.
So cool right?! I had a ball! I never really treat myself to much of anything really to be honest. I’m so doggone hard on myself. But I am learning self-compassion and self-love so I was really proud of myself for making the appointment and doing something for me.
Owners Maureen and Elizabeth took such good care of us. Elizabeth did an awesome job teaching all of us the proper way to care for our skin as trap music blared in the background. And Maureen kept the champagne flowing and made sure we understood the science behind the products. Maureen is an actual chemist so she knows her stuff!
So now that I’ve been using the products for a couple of weeks I want to share the products and techniques I use to get healthy, bright skin.
4 Steps To My New Facial Routine
So the very first thing I do is grab a small towel and run hot water over it in the sink. As the hot water is warming up the towel, I put about a quarter size amount of The Scratch Goods Tea Tree Cleansing Oil $16 // into my hands and massage it onto my face. I’ll do this with a full face of makeup on and it’s amazing to see just how quickly the cleansing oil gets rid of all the makeup, gook, and grime. After I’ve massaged the oil for a bit, I wring out the towel and place it gently on my face and press for about 20 seconds. The towel acts as a bit of a steam treatment and also aids in wiping away all the dirt. Sometimes I repeat this process if I have a ton of makeup on just to be sure.
Next, I take my Pearlessence Rose Water $8.99 that I have been completely obsessed with for the past year and spritz my face with it a few times. I then get a cotton round and gently use it as a toner to wipe away any excess dirt and to tone my skin. You can find Pearlessence Rose Water in stores at TJMaxx and Marshalls.
I follow up with an Argan oil + Vitamin E Balancing Facial Oil $9.99 that is also by Pearlessence. I use it as my moisturizer. A little bit goes a long way, so don’t go too overboard. In the morning tend to use it sparingly because I don’t want my makeup slipping and sliding off. I use a little more at night. I just gently massage it into my skin and that’s it. In stores at Tj Maxx and Marshall’s.
Now every Sunday night I use The Scratch Goods Matcha Mask $18 This mask is the truth ladies! It helps tighten and tone, boost circulation and get rid of dark spots. Goodbye acne scars! The mask is so much fun to do because you can mix it with whatever liquid you’d like for added benefits. I’ve mixed it with honey, carrot juice, and even coffee! All you do is add about 1-2 teaspoons of the powder with the liquid of your choice. You mix it until you get a hummus like consistency. Apply to your face and catch up on Game of Thrones for about 20 minutes and then remove with a warm towel. Elizabeth made sure to tell us to follow up with an oil immediately, so I use the Argan Oil and Vitamin E Serum Again.
It’s crazy how afraid I was to use natural facial products, now I can’t imagine my life without them! Ditching all of the chemicals and trading them in for products that are safe enough to eat has been one of the best decisions I’ve made all year round. My skin is brighter, healthier and dare I say glowing?! For the first time in years, I feel so confident without makeup on. And that’s major for me!
What’s your daily facial routine like? Do you use natural products? If so I’d love to know what you’re using!
